The month of April includes three exciting, new gourd classes with Gloria Crane! Gloria is an award-winning artist whose beautiful “Geisha” gourd piece is featured on the current Welburn Gourd Farm catalog.
Pictured left, “Dragonfly” gourd class with Gloria Crane, taking place Saturday, April 4th, 2009.
In this class you’ll discover everything you need to know to create this stunning gourd pot, including:
- how to get a flawless patina finish on your gourd art using Gloria’s favorite patina paint products (she’s tried a lot of them and she’ll tell you why she prefers this one over all others!).
- creating a “mock” filigree look using a simple burning method rather than the tedious carving technique, which often results in breakage of your gourd.
- applying metal leaf the quick and easy way using an adhesive that is simple to work with plus performs beautifully on a gourd, keeping its strength over time so that your metal leafing stays put and does not flake off.
- and more!
This class is coming up in just 2 weeks and is sure to fill fast, so sign up now! Coming up on Saturday, April 18th, 2009, is Gloria’s “Carved Gecko” class, pictured above, right.
In this information-packed class, Gloria takes you step-by-step to create this impressive piece. You’ll enjoy:
- learning to add dimension by creating carved “sand waves” or ripples on your gourd.
- how to relief carve your gecko image using the “pitting” technique with your carving tools, giving it a three dimensional effect and making the colors “jump out” and seem even more brilliant.
- the best method for adding a patina finish to your gourd using Gloria’s favorite patina product.
- how to use a simple chip carving technique on your gourd rim to give your work a beautiful, finished look that is both fast and easy to do (instead of spending all that time on a beaded or woven rim, you get to play with color and carving effects!)
- and more!
Also in April are two absolutely awe-inspiring classes with Carrie Dearing!
Learn to create this breath-taking, 3-D, Carved Buffalo piece, Saturday, April 25, 2009!
The exciting techniques you’ll discover in this class include:

- how to completely carve out the buffalo image to get your 3-D effect, including simple techniques for getting realistic fur on your buffalo.
- the best woodburning tips to use for carved images and tricks to making your animal appear real
- how to apply paints to create your final, life-like buffalo.
- how to create the “basket-weave” on each side of your buffalo portrait using carving and woodburning techniques.
- using turquoise or other semi-precious stones as inlay pieces to accent and add color (and value!) to your art.
- and more! Click here to register.
Be sure to sign up for Carrie’s NEW “Navajo Grandmother” portrait class, taking place Saturday April 18th!
Just when we think we’ve seen Carrie’s most spectacular gourd art, she comes along and outdoes herself! This “Navajo Grandmother” portrait piece is one of absolute favorites so far, and now you have the opportunity to learn all Carrie’s secrets, including:
- the best way to transfer your Navajo Grandmother image to your gourd.
- the best woodburning tips for creating shading to give your portrait the depth and realism you want.
- what you must know in order to make hair look real.

- adding your turquoise cab for the earring to create dimension and help bring your portrait to life.
