Opeing Day is Monday, March 1st, 2010 and is the first day the new crop of gourds is available to the public at the farm. It’s always a huge event for gourd lovers because some of the most beautiful and sought-after gourd shapes are available!

This stunning piece by Serena Kovalosky is entitled “Earthpod II” and was several months in creation. Serena Kovalosky’s work is inspired by the pristine wilderness of the mountains surrounding her studio.

This particular piece represents a “carrying vessel”, symbolic of the pods in nature that carry seeds for the next generation.Earthpod II is ornately woodburned with organic designs representing earth, seeds and water.

Gold alloy gilding enhances the nobility of the piece’s symbolic function.

Dimensions: 10”(d) x 5½”(h).Asking Price: $600This second piece, entitled, “Ancient Tree Bowl,” was carved entirely by hand and was made to look though it might have been found on the forest floor.

The deep mahogany interior showcases the intricate carving as well as the detailed design work that has been woodburned onto the surface. The bottom half is gilded in a richly antiqued gold alloy, bringing the piece into the contemporary realm.

Specialty Shapes In Short Supply at the Farm — Don’t Miss Out!

Every year we get a small number of specialty shapes that are the result of cross pollination in the fields.

These gourds are pure products of Mother Nature and nothing we planned for or could duplicate if we tried. Some are so spectacular they could be left as is and displayed as works of art in their own right!

Because each one is so unique and because there are so few of them, these gourds are not available on our web site or through mail order, and they are always the first to sell out at the farm.

Also very popular and in extremely short supply this year (and therefore not available on our web site) are the apple gourd, egg gourd, and people gourd (pictured right).

Pictured left, “Spirit Doll” by Kathy Riker, created using a people gourd. (If you ever have the opportunity to take Kathy’s Spirit Doll class, it is a fantastic class and an opportunity not to be missed!)

Egg gourds are another popular shape, great for making ornaments (see photo, right) and more delicate projects. The shells are thinner on these gourds, but their near-perfect, egg shape makes them a favorite among gourders.

Other rare gourds include the maranka gourd, the zucca gourd, the sculpture gourd, and the warty gourd.

Warty gourds, along with apple and maranka gourds, have amazingly dense shells so they take colors and finishes differently than other gourds.

One of the reasons they are so popular is the heavy shell can be waxed and polished to a very high shine, making any colors applied to the gourd appear deeper and more brilliant than normal.

Zucca gourds are prized for their large form and unique shape, and although thinner in shell thickness, they are often used to make sculpture pieces and large kachina dolls or figurines. (Pictured right, Phoebe Welburn holds a large zucca gourd.)

Fans of the popular TV series, “Star Trek,” often refer to the maranka gourd as the “Klingon” gourd because its lumpy look is so reminiscent of the facial features on the Klingon characters. These gourds are always popular with our customers!

New this year are a limited number of “basketball gourds” with absolutely incredibly, thick shells! (see photo, below, right) We’d like to take credit for planting these, but yet again it is a shape that came as an unexpected gift from the gourd patch.

The hard, dense shell of these gourds is similar to the apple gourd but they have no ridges or bumps and are strikingly symmetrical and smooth.

Savvy shoppers know to come early for the opportunity to purchase the specialty shape gourds as many of them sell out within the first week.

Got Stems? If you love long and elegant stems on your gourds, you will LOVE the selection of bottle gourds this year, many of which have been cut specifically with extra length on the stem!
